Earth Speakr

The trees are talking. It’s time to start listening.

An artwork started by Olafur Eliasson, amplified by children.

A composite image with seven vertical slices: each slice shows part of a different face, including children, characters made of moss, a strawberry, and an animated Earth with a face.

Insight

Contemporary artist Olafur Eliasson creates an inclusive artwork aimed at and developed by the children of the European Union.

Commissioned to commemorate the German Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the work illuminates the unified reality of a shared future regardless of language or latitude.

A man with gray hair, a beard, and glasses stands in a room with wooden shelves filled with books and objects. He wears a black shirt and gestures with his right hand while looking at the camera. Scientific glassware sits on a table nearby.

Idea

Earth Speakr gives a voice to both children and the planet, inviting today’s decision-makers and global leaders to listen.

The work enables children to personify objects and leave messages in the world using their facial expression via the free app. Adults can view the messages in AR, as well as place collections anywhere in the world.

Impact

An artwork of empowerment and solidarity.

Launching in all 24 official languages of the European Union, children are connected by being joint creators of the artwork. Collective concerns are surfaced both locally, and globally, to the people in power.

“What Earth Speakr will become depends on the Earth Speakrs, their creativity and imagination. The artwork is made up of their thoughts and visions, concerns and hopes. Earth Speakr invites kids to speak their hearts and minds and participate in shaping our world and the planet, today and in the future.”

A cartoonish face with wide eyes and a sticking-out tongue appears to emerge playfully from the surface of a puddle, blending into the reflective, rippled water.
