Glyptoteket

The Living Museum

Bringing the true nature of a cultural gem to life.

Insight

Within a quiet shell, a world full of worlds beckons.

Nestled in the heart of Copenhagen, the legendary Ny Carlsberg Glyptoteket might appear at first glance to be a quiet monolith, still, serene and steeped in the past. That’s only half the story.

In reality, The Glyptoteket is one of Denmark’s most vibrant cultural forces. A museum alive with movement, hosting over 100 events a year, weaving contemporary art into its historic fabric and constantly reimagining what a museum can be.

Beneath the timeless façade lies a world full of worlds. How do you bring that energy to life in the digital space? That question is at the core of the new Glyptoteket.com experience.

Idea

Reviving the living museum.

With every pixel and interface, the new Glyptoteket.com is designed to capture and translate the energy of the museum. Honouring Carlsberg founder and patron of the museum Carl Jacobsen’s original idea of living art for living people, the result is a platform that feels alive and constantly evolving. By translating the feeling you get when you step inside the physical museum, digital visitors are given a feeling of vibrancy waiting inside.

The Glyptoteket is positioned as more than a museum, it’s a living organism and dynamic cultural space where ancient stories and contemporary voices meet. Through 10,000 artworks, 6,000 years of history and numerous annual events, Glyptoteket.com successfully transforms the museum into a place you have to return to, again and again.

AKQA covered all layers of the journey from experience strategy to creative concept, UI design to performance using the content management system Umbraco.

Impact

Living art for living people.

This digital shift in perception brings new audiences closer and strengthens bonds with the core demographic. It boosts engagement, profile and visibility, preserving history as well as activating it.

The revitalised Glyptoteket.com is a platform that invites people in from the minute they enter the site and plan their experience, to when they set foot inside the museum’s four walls. From a stunning building of marble, mosaics, brick and glass in the middle of Copenhagen, life calls you from the depths of history. Will you answer?

AKQA’s multidisciplinary team has guided the process confidently and demonstrated a deep understanding of The Glyptoteket, allowing us to achieve an excellent result.
