Problem

For nearly 120 years, Montblanc has defined the art of writing. The shift to taps and swipes eroded the ritual, felt most clearly in the chasm between an instant message and a handwritten note. Montblanc saw what others missed: technology, applied with craft and intention, could be the very thing to carry writing forward.

Background

While the industry chose speed, Montblanc saw a different opening: the opportunity to carry the legacy of writing as craft, ritual and identity into the digital era. AKQA partnered with them on a two-year journey from vision to industrial design.

Ambition

To carry the art of writing into the modern era. To restore the personal connection of the pen in a world of constant connectivity. To invent a new category of writing instrument and establish Montblanc's relevance for a new generation of writers.

IDEAFor the love

The interface embraces e-ink’s slower frame rate, with animation that mimics the rhythm of pen strokes. Handcrafted iconography and a visual identity rooted in Montblanc's heritage unify the experience across hardware, software and companion apps.
